Early GotG Concept Art Reveals A Way More Intimidating Ronan the Accuser
It’s no secret that the superhero costumes fans see on the screen go through many iterations and design concepts before a final look is decided upon. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, every character, from Captain America to the Red Skull, go through many concepts — from the wholly original to the surprisingly comics-accurate.
Earlier this year, concept Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development and concept artist Ryan Meinerding shared a piece of early concept artwork for director James Gunn’s first Guardians of the Galaxy movie that featured both Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon with looks that were quite faithful to the comics.
Today, Marvel Studios’ Director of Visual Development and concept artist Andy Park revealed another piece of early art from the first Guardians film, one featuring a rejected design for the movie’s main villain, Ronan the Accuser. The artwork presents a version of Ronan that was more bulky than what we ended up seeing on the screen, and infinitely more intimidating. The armor worn by the character appears both techno-futuristic and ancient at the same time, giving him a timeless and mysterious allure that would have made for a fascinating cinematic look.

Ultimately, Guardians of the Galaxy would feature a less armored and more streamlined version of the Accuser. However, that doesn’t mean that this look — or something close to it — won’t ever be seen on the big screen.
After all, although the character died at the end of the film, actor Lee Pace has been tapped to reprise the role in the 90s’-set Captain Marvel film. Since the movie takes place decades before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s possible that Ronan will return wearing a very different costume.

Although there is no official release date, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2020. Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto, McKenna Grace and Annette Bening in as-yet-undisclosed roles. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
