Zombieland 2 Is Officially Happening, With Emma Stone And Woody Harrelson

One entertainment macguffin that doesn't seem to be going out of style anytime soon is good old fashioned zombies. There's something classic and terrifying about the dead rising in order to consume flesh. Zombies have been especially on trend lately, due to the massive success of AMC's The Walking Dead and its spinoff. But before Rick Grimes was kicking ass and taking names, we got lighthearted undead fun with Zombieland. The 2009 dark comedy was written by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and quickly became a cult classic. A sequel has long been rumored, and now it looks like it's finally happening.
After a decade of conversations and hoping, Zombieland 2 has officially been green lit by Sony. The upcoming sequel will bring back all of its original starring cast, including Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin. Original director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) is returning to helm the project, and Reese and Wernick will once again write the script. The gang's all back, so we should expect some fun zombie violence and Twinkies in our future. Zombieland 2 will begin production in January 2019, and will reportedly hit theaters in October 2019.
THR's report about Zombieland 2 will please the fans who have been hoping for a Zombieland sequel since the first one arrived. While the conversation hasn't really stopped in the years since Zombieland's release, things escalated in the past few months. Rhett Reese and Paul Wenick recently teased that they were hoping the film would happen and begin filming in October of 2019, although they'll be getting to work much sooner. The duo also expressed their interest to bring back the original cast, which seems to have gone off swimmingly. It's just too bad Bill Murray didn't survive the movie to reprise his role.
Now does seem like the perfect time to bring Zombieland 2 to theaters. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are being universally celebrated for writing both Deadpool and the recent sequel. With fans and critics excited about their work, there is an active audience for the long awaited Zombieland follow-up.
Additionally, zombies have become even more popular in the time since the original film was released, mostly thanks to AMC's The Walking Dead franchise. Doing a new Zombieland movie has the potential to poke fun at zombie tropes that audiences have become used to since Rick Grimes woke up from that coma. Zombieland is so successful because it's self-aware, and now there seems to be a wealth of new material to mine from.
Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg's careers have both really taken off since Zombieland, with each of them earning Oscar attention for projects like The Social Network and La La Land. Woody Harrelson has been in every movie imaginable, while Abigail Breslin recently starred in Scream Queens and the TV remake of Dirty Dancing.
Zombieland 2 is currently set to arrive sometime in October 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
