The Marvel Cinematic Universe continued its hot streak earlier this summer with the release of Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and The Wasp, showing just how insane the Ant-Man corner of the MCU can truly become. Fans of the franchise waited three years to witness the inner workings of the Quantum Realm, and while we got some fascinating imagery, newly released concept art leads us to believe that early versions of the adventure almost had Hank Pym suit up as Yellowjacket in the microverse. Senior Concept Illustrator Jackson Sze took to social media and posted:

So, it looks like the Quantum Realm adventure was almost considerably different than the one seen in Ant-Man and The Wasp. The team behind the sequel knew that the Quantum Realm would play a role in the story, but with no concrete narrative to work with, this released mock-up shows a version of events in which the entire team went down into the microscopic universe, with Hank Pym possibly wearing a modified version of the Yellowjacket suit to accompany Scott and Hope on the mission to rescue Janet.

This is cool all by itself, but there is an extra layer added if you're familiar with the source material. While the first version of Yellowjacket introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), in the pages of Marvel Comics it was a name and special suit that Hank Pym originally came up with back in the 1960s while experiencing a violent schizophrenic episode:

As alluded to, however, the idea of Michael Douglas' Hank Pym wearing the suit in Ant-Man And The Wasp also makes quite a bit of sense bit in the big screen world, as the suit was already established as canon in the original Ant-Man. Perhaps the vision of the sequel featured above could have seen Hank Pym not only take Darren Cross' technology and improve on it, but also utilize it in his mission to find his wife in the Quantum Realm.

In the end, however, Hank Pym did not end up wearing the Yellowjacket suit. That said, he does get to put on a suit of his very own and enter the Quantum Realm to be the hero of his own story. As the film shows, Hope and Scott are forced to stay in the real world to battle Ghost and Sonny Burch's gang, meaning that Hank has to enter the dimension and save Janet by himself.

Of course, for those of you who have not had a chance to see Ant-Man and The Wasp yet, the film is still in theaters. We will get a chance to see where Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne go next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Avengers 4 premieres in theaters next year on May 3, 2019!
