When the title of Jon Watt's Spider-Man: Homecoming was first announced, Marvel fans everywhere smirked a little bit. After all, while part of the title is referencing the fact that the film features a homecoming dance, it was also a clear nod to the fact that the hero was finally getting his own Marvel Cinematic Universe feature. Because of this, we've been mulling over the sequel title, Spider-Man: Far From Home, since it was announced yesterday... and now Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that there are, in fact, multiple meanings:

[It's] similar [to Spider-Man: Homecoming]. I won't say what the meanings are, but we enjoy that title because, like Homecoming, it is full of alternate meaning. And we liked continuing the 'Home' thing, with the little Spidey symbol in the 'Home.'

The title of Spider-Man: Far From Home was officially announced by star Tom Holland on social media Saturday night -- and that was convenient timing since I was scheduled to talk to Kevin Feige this afternoon at the domestic press day for Ant-Man & The Wasp. I brought up the subject of the new title early in our conversation, noting in my question that Spider-Man: Homecoming was a loaded title, and the executive/filmmaker explained that there is a commonality in their names.

So what could Spider-Man: Far From Home mean? For starters, there have been multiple reports that have suggested that the 2019 blockbuster will be taking Peter Parker out of New York and over to Europe, which matches the title from a geographic standpoint. But what could the double meaning be? What immediately comes to mind is simply the idea of the hero being totally out of his element and lost in a post-Avengers 4 world. Then again perhaps the title could also referencing a journey much more extreme than just Europe -- perhaps through time or alternate dimensions. We really won't know anything for sure until more official details come out about the film, and we'll probably won't be getting those for a while.

As for the little Spidey symbol in the title for Spider-Man: Far From Home that Kevin Feige references, you can see it in this screenshot from Tom Holland's announcement video.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is the second collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, is scheduled for release next summer, July 5, 2019 and will be the first title of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four plans. Fortunately fans don't have to wait that long for the next blockbuster from the franchise, as Ant-Man & The Wasp will be in theaters on July 6th. As part of that, be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for not only more from my interview with Kevin Feige, but also director Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Hannah John-Kamen.
