Sonic Movie BTS Photos Tease James Marsden’s Role, Green Hill Zone Homage
The unprecedented and long-awaited Sonic the Hedgehog movie will combine a live-action setting and characters while making the blue blur a CGI creation. With most video game movies still being poorly-received, many are skeptical that this movie will do anything for the genre — but regardless, production is speeding along, and there are some new set pics to prove it.
The first few set photos from the film have surfaced, teasing what’s in store for the movie’s plot and setting. After an announcement that James Marsden would be in the lead human role, the set photos reveal that he is playing Sheriff Tom Wachowski for the town of Green Hills (no, it’s not Green Hill Zone). Marsden has previously appeared in a hybrid live-action/animation movie in the form of Hop, where he worked alongside the Easter Bunny.

Another set photo was revealed showing us that the name of the town is indeed “Green Hills,” paying homage to the first stage in the Sonic games: Green Hill Zone. With a live-action interpretation, trying to recreate Green Hill Zone would likely look very jarring to a lot of viewers, so it makes sense that they’d try to go with a more realistic interpretation. Presented with the slogan, “The little town with a big heart,” it seems the movie is trying to make Green Hills be a more nostalgic, friendly town that will, no doubt, be disrupted by Dr. Robotnik, thus calling for Sonic’s help.

Scheduled for release on November 15, 2019, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being directed by Jeff Fowler with Tim Miller as the executive producer. It will star James Marsden as Tom Wachowski.
