Netflix Inks Overall Deal With ‘Money Heist’ Creator

Álex Pina, creator of the Spanish-language heist phenomenon, will develop new series for the streaming giant.

Netflix is inking yet another overall deal with one of its creators. The streaming giant has signed producer-writer Álex Pina, creator of the platform’s Spanish-language heist series La Casa de Papel (Money Heist), to an exclusive pact.

Pina and his production company Vancouver Media will produce new series and projects exclusively for Netflix under the terms of the deal. Pina currently has Sky Rojo, a female-action drama starting production in 2019, in development at the streamer, as well as the third part of La Casa de Papel.

“We are thrilled to announce our overall deal with Alex Pina and to be working with such a talented creator and production team. We have full confidence that Alex will continue to break boundaries with his unique vision and storytelling capturing audiences worldwide,” said Erik Barmack, vp of international originals at Netflix.

“Working alongside Netflix is a dream come true. We are living in a moment where series are becoming one of the most relevant cultural movements ever,” added Pina. “The possibility of reaching the last corner on the planet and building a world where content of all languages can travel globally, is to be part of the dream of thousands of creatives from around the world; productions coming from small places in the world that today can reach everyone. We had to be there, beside Netflix, as part of this revolutionary challenge.”

Netflix has been ramping up its showrunner pacts of late. The streamer set off a frenzy when it lured Shonda Rhimes away from Shondaland and Ryan Murphy from 20th Century Fox with record-breaking nine-figure deals this past year, only to later land a mega-deal with Barack and Michelle Obama. The streaming service also has overalls with Stranger Things' Matt and Ross Duffer and Shawn Levy, Orange Is the New Black's Jenji Kohan and Arrested Development's Mitch Hurwitz.
