Leto’s Morbius Film Targeting February 2019 Start Date

For a number of years now, Sony has been toying with the idea of producing a full-blown film franchise based around the various characters made famous by Marvel’s Spider-Man mythos (0ther than Spidey himself, of course.)

Now that Venom has been unleashed, bagging box office records in the process, it seems that the “Spider-Verse” is truly about to begin in earnest.

It was previously reported that the next installment in Sony’s new franchise following Venom would be a film based on the classic Spider-Man villain/supernatural anti-hero Morbius the Living Vampire, which is set to star Jared Leto as the titular character.

Sony producer Avi Arad revealed the film could begin production as early as this February. “More or less, February?” Arad told Collider when asked when filming for Morbius would begin.

“Yeah, the plan is early part of next year,” fellow Sony producer Matt Tolmach added. “We’re still working on it.

With the start of production for Morbius apparently just around the corner, it will certainly be interesting to see what new flavor it will bring to the Spider-Verse, as well as how it will contrast against Venom in terms of content and visuals.

After all, whereas Venom began life as a Spider-Man doppelganger and evolved into a horror-esque monster over time, Morbius was that type of character from day one. How this is represented on the big screen will likely be a huge talking point going forward.

Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff film Morbius will be directed by Daniel Espinosa from a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film does not currently have a release date.
