Justin Theroux Joins Lady and the Tramp Remake in Key Role

Justin Theroux has joined the Lady and the Tramp remake as the titular Tramp.

The live-action remake is in the works for exclusive release on Disney’s soon-to-debut streaming service, and Theroux, perhaps best known for his work on the HBO series The Leftovers, is in final talks to voice the film’s male lead.

The Tramp was voiced by Larry Roberts in the animated classic. The role would later go to Jeff Bennett in the 2001 sequel Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure.

Disney is still looking, and maybe listening, for the voice of its leading Lady, but they have cast her closest friend. Emmy-nominated actress Ashley Jensen of Extras will co-star and play the voice of a Scottish Terrier named Jackie, a character that was a male named Jock in the original.

The original Lady and the Tramp came out in 1955. It told the story of an American cocker spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family. When she meets a stray from the Bowery called the Tramp, the two dogs embark on a romantic adventure and fall in love.

There is also that famous awkward kiss over a long string of spaghetti.

Charlie Bean, co-director of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, is directing from a script by Andrew Bujalski. Brigham Taylor is producing the film. There are no plans for a theatrical release.
