Joker: Todd Phillips Reveals ‘Name’ of Joaquin Phoenix’s Character, Shows New Look
Filmmaker Todd Phillips has shared a photo of Joaquin Phoenix’s character in the upcoming Joker origin film including the future villain’s name before his infamous transformation.
The writer-director posted a photo earlier today on his Instagram account showing a shaggy-haired, haggard Phoenix revealing the character’s name to be Arthur.

Set photos earlier today from the DC origin film showed Phoenix in-character during filming messing around with a circus clown as the eagerly anticipated movie enters principal photography. The actor had visibly lost weight in preparation for the role when he arrived in New York City for filming at the beginning of the month.
Previous depictions of the Clown Prince of Crime had the villain originally with the moniker “Jack” as seen in the 1989 Batman film and the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

While further details about Arthur before he becomes the Gotham City supervillain are currently unknown, it is rumored his character will be a failed standup comedian caring for his ill, overbearing mother in the origin film.
Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and Zazie Beetz. It is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2019.
