John Carpenter Blasts Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble in Little China
Director John Carpenter has shared his opinion about the upcoming Big Trouble in Little China sequel starring Dwayne Johnson, and he’s not happy.
Speaking to CinemaBlend during a roundtable discussion, Carpenter — who was asked his opinion on the trend towards follow-up films rather than remakes — revealed his annoyance at Johnson’s Big Trouble in Little China. “They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson,” he said. “That’s what they want. So they just picked that title. They don’t give a shit about me and my movie. That movie wasn’t a success.”

Carpenter directed the original version of the film, which released in 1986. The movie, which starred Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall, initially flopped in theaters, earning approximately $11.1 million against a budget of over $19 million. The film later became a cult classic. Johnson signed onto a continuation of the series in 2015.
This is just the most recent of Carpenter’s films to be remade or receive sequels over the years without his involvement. Others reboots of Carpenter’s films that didn’t involve him include Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing. Carpenter is, however, involved in this year’s Halloween sequel.

With Johnson’s incredibly busy schedule, which includes Hobbes & Shaw, Jungle Cruise and a sequel to Jumanji, it’s unknown when Big Trouble in Little China will officially begin filming.
