Janet van Dyne is a Survivalist Badass in Early Ant-Man and the Wasp Concept Art
Much of the plot of Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp revolved around Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) trying to find a way to reach the Quantum Realm in order to rescue Jane van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the clutches of the microscopic reality. As viewers had learned in 2016’s Ant-Man, Janet had turned off the regulator of her Wasp tech and shrunken down to a subatomic level to stop a nuclear warhead years prior.
Thanks to some help from Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hank was able to go into the Quantum Realm, and rescue his long-lost wife. Somehow, Janet van Dyne was able to survive for more than three decades in the subatomic reality. When Hank found her, she still had part of her costume — although its color had changed. Plus, she wore a beige coat and she was armed with a spear that was made up of one of her suit’s wings.
This new look made fans wonder how/where/when Janet had found a new coat in a microverse filled with microscopic lifeforms, and how she had managed to stay so clean all these years. However, that was not the original look the character was supposed to have. Jackson Sze, Senior Concept Illustrator at Marvel Studios, recently shared a piece of concept art from Ant-Man and the Wasp on his Instagram page that featured a much different look for Janet — one dubbed ‘Survival Janet.’

“Imagining Janet having to survive in the Quantum Realm for years,” the artist wrote. “Battle hardened, and self sufficient, she would have modified her suit with materials she found in her alien environment.” This look is one that would have made more sense in the context of the film, given that Janet spent years trying to survive in a hostile and alien environment.
Of course, there is always the possibility that there is more to Janet’s time in the Quantum Realm than she has revealed. After all, the character also developed superpowers during her time in the microverse, which means there is much to tell about her adventures there. Some fan theories even suggest that Janet has crossed paths with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) before. Perhaps we will find these answers in Avengers 4.
