Infinity War Nearly Brought Back a Character From Thor: The Dark World

In Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth’s titular God of Thunder lost almost everything. His powerful hammer Mjolnir was destroyed, he lost his father Odin, the Warriors Three were brutally taken out by Hela, and the entire realm of Asgard was pulverized. Oh, and he lost his long hair, too. Then, if all that weren’t enough, Avengers: Infinity War took what little the character had left: his best friend Heimdall and almost all of the Asgardian refugees were disposed of by the Black Order, and his brother Loki fell at the hands of Thanos.

These losses propelled Thor on a quest to arm himself with a new Asgardian weapon, one that would be powerful enough to take on the Mad Titan himself. This would lead him to the realm of Nidavellir, where the God of Thunder would help the Dwarf King Eitri forge a new axe known as Stormbreaker.

However, there was a time when Thor’s quest was supposed to lead him to a much different destination — one where he could have reconnected with a long lost member of his family.

On the commentary track of Infinity War, director Joe Russo revealed that Thor’s grandfather Bor was considered to make a return. “We explored a lot of different ideas of where Thor could go for that weapon,” Russo revealed. “We even had versions of the story at one time where he was going to visit this sort of ghost of his dead grandfather – which was one version we were playing with that we didn’t end up using. I am happy where we had settled.”

Bor, the father of Odin and previous King of Asgard, made a brief appearance in the opening scene of Thor: The Dark World, in the prologue that showed the war between the forces of Asgard and the Dark Elves. Bor was seen fighting on the battlefield, where he ordered the Aether (aka the Reality Stone) to be hidden away for all eternity.

It would have been interesting to see Thor commune with the ghost of his grandfather, but it was decided that his emotional story arc was ultimately better served with Rocket and Groot as his companions.
