Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Movie Is ‘Definitely Happening’
Although Dwayne Johnson was originally intended to make his debut as Black Adam in Shazam!, those plans changed early last year when it was announced his DC villain/antihero will instead headline his own film. Since then there’s been a lot of discussion about the project, but few concrete signs of movement, even as Johnson’s schedule fills up, leading to questions about its future. However, producer Hiram Garcia confirms Black Adam is “definitely happening.”
“We’re actually very deep into a script on it right now, which is coming along really well,” he told Collider. “I’m really excited with the story we’ve crafted. Look, I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. I’ve always had this dream, I’ve always wanted to — You know, you kind of have like these goals of like, ‘One day I’d love to be able to do this and this,’ and making a superhero movie was definitely always one of my dreams. For the longest time, you know you kind of have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson, so I was always trying to figure out what’s the perfect character that will kind of fit him and his look and his build and his kind of edge and the attitude he’s got.”

Introduced in 1945 by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in The Marvel Family #1 in 1945, Black Adam is the first champion of the wizard Shazam. Originally the protector of ancient Egypt, Teth-Adam grew mad with power, and attempted to seize control. Infuriated with Adam’s abuse of power, Shazam banished him to the farthest star in the universe, forcing him to travel for several millennia to return to Earth. Killed off in his first appearance, the character was revived in the 1970s, and returned to plague Captain Marvel (aka Shazam) time and again. In modern times, however, Black Adam has been remade into a more morally gray character, and as acted as an antihero, even becoming a member of the Justice Society of America.
No release date has been announced, but Johnson has suggested Black Adam could begin production in late 2019.
