Apple's 'Carpool Karaoke' Nabs Short-form Emmy Nomination
A digital series based on Anthony Bourdain's 'Parts Unknown' was nominated for an Emmy in the shortform categories, which also recognized work by Megan Amram and Wyatt Cenac.
Apple Music's Carpool Karaoke spinoff nabbed an Emmy nomination on Thursday as part of a crop of short-form categories that also recognized the work of Anthony Bourdain, comedian Wyatt Cenac and The Good Place writer Megan Amram.
The Television Academy hands out Emmys for five short-form categories. Apple Music's nomination came in the variety series category, where it will go up against digital shorts from Comedy Central's The Daily Show and NBC's Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Also nominated in the variety category is Honest Trailers, which saw the departure of creator Andy Signore last year following sexual harassment allegations. Signore is not listed as a producer on the nomination.
Bourdain's nomination, for his CNN digital series Explore Parts Unknown, was in the short-form nonfiction or reality series category. The celebrity chef and journalist, who died June 8 in France, also received six Emmy nominations for CNN series Parts Unknown. Also nominated in the category were Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen, which streams on Bravo digital platforms, and NBC.com's Jay Leno's Garage.
The short-form Emmy categories, which were expanded in 2016, have become a source of frustration for some in the digital community, who feel that Emmy voters favor spinoff series based on popular television IP over original works by digital upstarts. That appears to have happened again this year in the show categories, where projects from the broadcast and cable networks dominate the nominations. But the acting categories do highlight projects from digital-first producers.
Naomi Grossman, who stars in Facebook series Ctrl Alt Delete, received a nomination for actress in a short-form comedy or drama series alongside Kelli O'Hara in self-distributed The Accidental Wolf and Megan Amram in the self-distributed An Emmy For Megan. In the actor category, DeStorm Power was nominated for his Caught The Series YouTube show and Melvin Jackson Jr. was nominated for YouTube series This Eddie Murphy Role Is Mine, Not Yours.
The Television Academy will hand out the short-form Emmy awards as part of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 8 and 9. A broadcast of the show will air on FXX on Sept. 15.
