All The Rumored Star Wars Spinoffs
The Star Wars universe is sure to continue after Episode IX but exactly what it will look like or what movies we'll actually see is far from clear. Following the success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story it seemed that spinoffs were going to become a standard part of the future of Star Wars but following the less than warm reception of Solo that's become less certain. One report claims that these spinoffs are all being put on hold, while another claims that's not the case. If we are going to see more Star Wars Story films, there are three different projects that are reportedly in various stages of development.
The longest rumored of these spinoffs is a movie based on the bounty hunter Boba Fett. The spinoff was actually rumored back with the first batch of Star Wars films that Disney put together along with the new trilogy. Josh Trank was originally rumored to direct, but when he walked away or was fired, it's not clear, the project was reportedly shelved entirely. The movie has since been revived as recently it's been reported that Logan director James Mangold will helm the movie. Still, Lucasfilm has yet to officially announce that this movie is real, so it still qualifies as a rumor.
The second biggest rumor of a Star Wars spinoff film is actually the one that has been rumored to come next. A movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi that is set between the original and prequel trilogies has been consistently rumored for the last year or so, including word that the project is in active pre-production as we speak and is planning to come out in 2020. The regular rumors regarding this project would certainly indicate that there's some validity to it and Lucasfilm certainly needs to be actively working on something if it plans to release a Star Wars film in 2020, but we don't know for sure that this is what the studio is doing.
The final rumored Star Wars Story is so nebulous that the first indication that we had of its existence was a report that it might be dead. Some sort of spinoff based around the Mos Eisley spaceport was apparently being considered at Lucasfilm at one point. It sounds like this project is no longer an active concern at Lucasfilm, but whether it's been outright canceled or simply postponed to focus on other things is unclear. Like the Boba Fett movie, it's possible this one could come back into the conversation down the road if the right pieces fall into place.
Star Wars fans are waiting to get an indication what's next for Star Wars. It looks like Lucasfilm might be taking a page from Marvel's book, waiting to make any major announcements until the end of the currently running story arc. We can be fairly certain that the studio knows what's coming, but it may be awhile before the rest of us are informed.
